How exactly can you measure the success of a college course? For us here at
StraighterLine (SL), a new online educational solution, we believe one method is to show just how many degrees can be completed by our courses.
For an initial survey, we looked at where credits for bachelor’s, associate’s and master’s degrees would apply for only our first four initial entry-level courses, College Algebra, English Composition I, Accounting I and Economics I (we now offer six entry-level courses and two developmental courses that will help students to prepare for the entry level courses, with more to be added to our curriculum shortly). We examined where those credits would apply specifically at our first four regionally accredited partner colleges (this list has grown as well since we launched) –
Fort Hays State University,
Grand Canyon University (GCU),
Potomac College and
Jones International University. Keep in mind that apart from our previous caveats, there are non-partner colleges that recognize our partners’ courses as equivalent programs, so the numbers we are giving you here are the bare minimums.
Breaking the figures down by each course we offer, the degrees which require them at each institution are as follows.
• College Algebra: 131 degrees (77 at Fort Hays, 35 at GCU, 10 at Potomac, 9 at Jones)
• English Composition I: 132 (78 Fort Hays, 35 GCU, 10 Potomac, 9 Jones)
• Accounting I: 35 (11 Fort Hays, 13 GCU, 2 Potomac, 9 Jones)
• Economics I: 9 (5 GCU, 4 Potomac)
That comes out to 166 degrees with connections to our courses at Fort Hays, 88 at GCU, 26 at Potomac and 27 at Jones, for a grand total of 307 overall. That is a pretty big variety of options for just four introductory college courses.
And remember, that does not include our newer offerings – Accounting II and Economics II – nor reflect degrees from other institutions that will accept transfer credit from our partner institutions. If they were factored into the study, we would definitely be talking hundreds of more degrees that use our courses.
This sort of flexibility is what we envisioned in creating SL. Our system allows for students to take one or more courses online at any time they want and study whenever and however they please. We only ask that they complete the course within six months. For just $399 per course, or $99 per month, if they prefer, they can begin learning with us along with the assistance of live tutors available online 24/7. It is an easy, convenient way to begin one’s college education, and as our survey shows, our courses have multiple applications should the student still be undecided on a major when taking them.
We at SL want to assist you or your family and friends in your higher education needs. To learn more how we can help, visit
